What’s Your Sign? By: AMANDA LABOY Staff Writer

Everyone knows their birthdays, but do you know your sign and what it means? Some say that zodiac signs are a spiritual preference, others a greater source. Astrology is based on seasons and the relationships between the planets.
Zodiac signs also revolve around the elements: fire, earth, air, and water. The fire signs desire freedom. Fire signs are Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. The earth signs desire security. Earth signs include Capricorn, Taurus, and Virgo. The air signs desire freedom and use their minds to make sense of their lives. These signs are Libra, Aquarius, and Gemini. The water signs also need security and are attuned with waves of emotion. The water signs are Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces.
When you meet someone for the first time, it is easy to predict what his/her sign may be. If you meet someone that is very outgoing and loves the spotlight you may predict that that person is a Leo. Marina Andaloro from Cumberland County College is a Libra. When asked if she thought her sign fit her personality she replied, ”Yes, I feel like it fits me because Libras are outgoing and truthful.”
The cardinal signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. The common trait between these signs is the impetus to initiate or create, or to counter any institutive with another. The fixed signs are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. These signs are inclined to sustain or stabilize what has already been created, or to resist or practice endurance in the face of another’s initiative. The mutable signs are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. These signs take what has been created and attempt to alter or adapt it.
We all have read our horoscope at one time or another, and have been either pleasantly surprised or horribly stunned. Sometimes your horoscope can leave you with a great outlook about your day. It can also do the opposite and leave you dreading the rest of your day.
Zodiac signs can also help you choose mates based on sign compatibility. There are certain signs that just don’t mix. Have you ever began a relationship, looked at your compatibility, and realized your signs didn’t fit? David Santiago of Cumberland County College has. He stated, “I was in a relationship for two years [and] things were just not good. After it ended I was curious and looked up our compatibility and realized we did not fit each other at all! It would have saved me two years!”
One could argue that zodiac signs characteristics can either fit you perfectly or be the complete opposite. There is no set of characteristics that can define every single person, but it’s nice to see what’s in store.
